Pumpelly Wins Petit LeMans

BRASELTON, Ga. (Oct. 20, 2013)
 – Spencer Pumpelly closed the 2013 American Le Mans Series GTC season with a win in the 1,000 mile enduro at Road Atlanta: Petit Le Mans. The victory secured Pumpelly’s team, Flying Lizards Motorsports, the GTC Team Championship.

Partnered with co-drivers Nelson Canache Jr. and Madison Snow in the No. 45 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, Pumpelly faced adverse weather conditions at Road Atlanta through the first half of the race. As intermittent rain came and went over the 2.54-mile circuit, Pumpelly admitted he was relieved his job was to drive the car, not to make the decision on wet versus dry tires.

Starting from pole position won by Pumpelly in Friday’s qualifying session, co-driver Canache Jr. held the lead through his first stint and managed the changing track conditions like a veteran. Both he and third driver Snow kept the car out front in their respective stints, putting Pumpelly in a strong position to widen the team’s gap to second place. He set the GTC race lap record at Road Atlanta in his opening stint, a 1:25.098.

Pumpelly Captures GS Victory in Monterey

MONTEREY, Calif. (Sept. 9, 2013) – Spencer Pumpelly took his first Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge victory of the season last weekend at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. After starting from the back of the GS grid, BGB Motorsports worked a clever strategy to advance through the field and relied on Pumpelly to hold off a hard charging BMW for the win. Pumpelly followed the GS win with a runner-up finish in the Rolex Series GX class the same day.

On Saturday, it appeared as though a GS win for Pumpelly and team was unlikely. Co-driver Dr. Jim Norman had made only one lap in qualifying before an ABS failure ended in a flat-spotted tire. So severe was the vibration, the team opted to abort qualifying to avoid damaging the car. In the ultra competitive GS field, starting from the back of the grid is more than an uphill battle: it’s a mountain. Read more...

Win in Canada is a Narrow Miss for Pumpelly

BOWMANVILLE, Canada (July 22, 2013)
 – Spencer Pumpelly came just 2.3 seconds short of capturing his second-straight American Le Mans Series GTC victory on Sunday. Instead, it was a runner-up finish at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park for the driver of the No. 45 Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.

Qualifying for the GTC class illustrated how tight the category is, with the top four separated by just 0.6-second. Pumpelly squeezed the most out of the No. 45, putting it third on the grid with a 1:21.924 (108.056 mph).

For the start of the two hour and 45 minute race, teammate Nelson Canache Jr. got behind the wheel. The Venezuelan had an extraordinary opening stint, moving from third to first in GTC in the first two corners of the opening lap. He gradually built up a gap to second place as he prepared to hand the car over to Pumpelly.
